Not many teams can say they finished the season with a win.  The Boys did just that, finishing on a high, winning Bronze at OMHA's!  Great weekend.

Yesterday saw our boys play division opponent Barrie Colts for their second tilt of the season up in Innisfil Recreation Centre.  The team came out flat.  Barrie capitalized on some early sloppy play, potting their first goal at the eleven minute mark of the first.  A few minutes later, we took a 5-minute major on a marginal check-from-behind call. The colts would bury their second of the game late in that penalty.  Despite much pressure in the third period by the Waxers, the Colts would hold on.  Colts over Waxers 2-0 final.

Markham Majors tournament was this past weekend.  Our Waxers ended up first in round-robin play.  Friday afternoon started out slow with a 1-1 tie against WIndsor Spitfires. That night was a much different story, where the offense took control downing Waterloo Wolves 6-2.   The offense continued the next morning with a 6-1 win over Wheatfield Blades.  We ended the round robin with a 2-0 loss to cross-town rival Majors.  The semi-finals saw us playing Waterloo again with a similar result.  The 4-1 win over Waterloo would pitt us against division opponent York Simcoe in the finals.  The finals was a close game.  Waxers had many opportunities to score, but couldn't find the twine. York Simcoe lead the game 2-0 going into the third period.  Late in the third period, Cole Burtch finally potted one to cut YSE's lead in half.  At the 14 second mark, with the goalie pulled, Waxers Scored, only to have it waived off by the official.  Great effort, the boys would have to settle for silver on this day.

Monday's game vs North Central Preds started off slow with no scoring in the first period, despite several powerplays for both teams.  The Waxers opened up the scoring early in the second period on a nice shot from Cole Burtch on a 2-on-1.    That was followed up three minutes later with another Waxer goal from Ben Reeves.  Four minutes into the third period, the boys in blue went ahead 4-0 on two very pretty powerplay goals from Austin Brimmer.  Finishing off the scoring was a beautiful breakaway feed to Lovisek from Palandra to close out the game 5-0 for the home team.   Diam Matthew recorded his first shutout of the season stopping 3 breakaways and all 18 of the pucks shot his way.

Two games this past weekend.  Sundays match was cross-town rival Richmond Hill Coyotes.  Two fluky goals put the Waxers in a big hole early in the first period. The boys battled back to tie the game in the second period with a goal from Caines and a point shot from Hillier.  Mid-way through the third period, Vanker scores the game winner to complete the comeback.  Character win for the boys.

Our much anticipated home opener on Monday, versus the highly toughted division rival Barrie colts, was a home town crowd pleaser.  The Waxers had their highest offensive rally of the season and downed the Colts 7-3.  Pair of goals from Lovisek and Reesor. Single tally's from Caines, Reeves & Brimmer.

The boys in blue came out firing in the first league game of the season.  Solid effort and team play all around. #77 Daniel Johnson pots his first as a Waxer from the point in the first period.  #19 Alec Lovisek firing on all cylinders potting the first hat trick of the season and racking up a 4 point night.  Sound night defensively for #92 Esa Patton paying the price blocking 3 shots. Single assists going to Ben Reeves, Harrison Caines & Cole Burtch.  Beaver with the first start between the pipes, comes out of the gate strong stopping 13 of 14 shots, closing out the game with a 4-1 Waxer win.

Your Minor Bantam Waxers took part in the Toronto Red Wings Early Bird Tournament this past weekend.

This tournament featured 41 of the top ranked teams from across Ontario and the US.  It was our first tournament & first games played of the year and the coaching staff was happy with the improvement throughout the games.  The team was led offensively by Austin Brimmer.  The goaltending tandem of Diam Matthew and Damon Beaver were extremely strong, making some unbelievable saves in especially the first two games.  The entire team, seemed to improve greatly with every game.  Unfortunately we fell short of advancing to Sunday. Overall it was a great learning experience for the boys and gave the staff a huge indication of things to work on moving forward.   Up next weekend, we have tilts with JRC and Red Wing Tournament winner Mississauga Rebels.
